eMedical Urgent Care  Hosts Teddy Bear Clinic

Middletown, N.J., April 28, 2015 – For all the tumbles, cuts and colds mothers kiss can’t cure, eMedical Urgent Care is there to help. A trip to the doctor’s office can be a traumatic experience for a child. In efforts to alleviate their fears, eMedical Urgent Care held a Teddy Bear Clinic at Red Bank Borough Schools Pre-K Program at Middletown Reformed Church on Thurs., March 5.

Children were able to register their bear just like a patient would be registered at the office and choose an aliment for the doctor to treat. Students were shown X-Rays of the bear and paws and claws were stitched and sewn back together.

“The presentation was enlightening – the students continue to excite one another with their now enhanced roles as doctor, nurse and patient. The teddy bear clinic and X-Rays were an added highlight that the children and staff enjoyed,” said Catherine Jasionowski, teacher at Red Bank Pre-K.

eMedical Urgent Care is equipped to handle pediatric patients and even has a designated room for children filled with books, toys and a television for added comfort. “For adults, a trip to the doctors is routine and isn’t so scary. For a child, it is all so new and we want to be sure that we not only help lessen their fear but also make the experience as pleasant as possible for the child so the next visit won’t be so scary,” said Dr. Jane Sennett, Medical Director of eMedical Urgent Care in Middletown and Berkeley Heights.

If you are a teacher and would like to have your class visit the office or would like a Teddy Bear Clinic hosted at your school, please contact Laura Grekoski at (973) 251-1151 or grekoskil@alpha-apr.com.

Local Student Photographers Help Decorate Newly Renovated eMedical Urgent Care

“The residents of Berkeley Heights are the reason we’ve been able to stay in the community for more than 30 years. When needing décor for the office, looking to local students to help was a natural decision,” explains Linda Balling, RN, practice manager. “The space is for the community and decorated by the members of the community; it is definitely a warm and inviting space.”

The work of 10 students was chosen to be displayed in the center. Those students are:

  • Kristian Alpizar, Jonathan Dayton High School
  • Isabella Bjorkeson, Governor Livingston High School
  • Julia Cemprola, Governor Livingston High School

Middltown Urgent Care Physician Honored with Second 'Top Doc' Designation

There are physicians who know from the moment they receive their first toy doctor kit that they want to grow up and save lives. And there are others that discover their passion later in life. Regardless of timing, their passion for helping others does not go unnoticed. And for Kurt Perry, MD, a physician at eMedical Urgent Care in Middletown, his second Top Doc recognition from New Jersey Monthly magazine is the continued validation of a long career.

“I try to provide the best care to the patients of eMedical Urgent Care. Being honored with this designation the past two years lets me know that what I am doing is working,” said Dr. Perry.

A New Jersey native, Dr. Perry grew up in Woodbridge. He briefly attended the University of Virginia with plans to pursue a career in engineering – a decision that was fueled by stellar math scores. Realizing he wanted to interact with people instead of computers, Dr. Perry moved back to New Jersey and attended Middlesex County College in Edison for two years before receiving his bachelor’s degree in biology at Rutgers University, New Brunswick. He earned his medical degree from the University of Bologna, Italy, and completed his residency in internal medicine at Monmouth Medical Center.

After finishing his residency Dr. Perry worked in the emergency department at Monmouth Medical Center, and was employed by the hospital - a rarity these days. In 1984, he helped found Monmouth Emergency Physicians, PA, an independent emergency group at Monmouth Medical Center. The group disbanded in 1997 when the contract was acquired by Emergency Medical Associates.

Dr. Perry retired from emergency medicine in 2010. Leaving emergency medicine to work in urgent care was a natural transition for Dr. Perry. Prior to working exclusively at eMedical Urgent Care, he spent the two years splitting his time between eMedical Urgent Care and with Monmouth Medical Center working in the express care division of the emergency department.

“I love urgent care. I enjoy this field,” says Dr. Perry. “Urgent care seems like a new branch of emergency medicine; the real emergency medicine is heart attacks and trauma. Urgent care is more the stuff that needs to be taken care of with some degree of urgency but is not life threatening.”

Having started his career in 1978, Dr. Perry has experienced healthcare before electronic medical records and healthcare reform.

“I prefer the simpler way,” said Dr. Perry. Advances in technology have simplified certain processes and overcomplicated others, in particular, record keeping. “You spend half the time with the patient and the other half documenting.

The goal was to make things simpler, but it has probably taken away from patient care. I make sure to take time to understand each patient’s complaint to deliver the most appropriate course of treatment.”

A change that has made Dr. Perry’s clinical life easier is the recent renovation to the Middletown eMedical Urgent Care center. Unveiled in March, the revamped center now features two additional exam rooms, including a child-friendly exam room; a state-of-the-art digital X-ray system, which enables patients to receive copies of their X-rays on disks; and completely new furnishings, flooring and wall décor in a soothing, beach-themed color palette. The office is equipped with a worker’s compensation suite, which centralizes all of the services and equipment needed to provide occupational health services.

eMedical Offices Urgent Care Center Now Offers Specialized Services for Patients with Autism

For patients with autism, a visit to the doctor can be a traumatic experience. The bright exam room lights, the dinging medical equipment, the feel of a cold stethoscope on the skin, the touch of the doctor’s hands – many of these sensations can be unpleasant and anxiety-producing for a patient with autism.

To provide more comprehensive, compassionate care for these patients, eMedical Offices urgent care center in Middletown now offers an autism-friendly examination room. The room, located away from the bustling nurses’ station and public waiting area, is equipped with iPads with apps that help staff communicate with patients with autism and others with verbal impairments.

The devices help medical providers identify the reason why the patient has arrived for care; the patient’s pain and discomfort level; and his or her communication preferences. It also enables staff to better explain what the patient can expect during his or her visit to alleviate fear and confusion. In addition, sensory boxes provide objects with a variety of textures that patients with autism can use to self-soothe and better deal with stress. Patients keep the objects after their visits.

“With one in 45 people in New Jersey now classified as having autism, this is a level of service that is sorely needed,” said Kristine Samson, MD, medical director. “Our staff is trained to care for the unique needs of this population, and we are proud to be able to offer this service to the greater Monmouth County area.”

The urgent care center recently completed a $500,000 renovation project which updated every room in the office, modernized equipment and improved patient comfort and privacy. For more information about the renovation project, visit http://emedicaloffices.com/index.php/news.

eMedical Offices urgent care celebrated the completion of its recent $500,000 renovation with an open house event and ribbon-cutting ceremony

March 31, marking the center’s 30th year of providing quality medical care to Monmouth County residents.

“This project began about two years ago when we were faced with a decision – move the practice to a newer, more modern space, or work with the landlord to renovate the current space. After nearly 30 years in this location, you can imagine that this decision wasn’t an easy one! We chose to stay here in Middletown and continue serving the residents of Monmouth County,” Raymond Iannaccone, MD, president and chief executive officer of eMedical Offices, explained during the event.

“This is a great day for us not just because of this renovation project, but because this is the start of a revitalized practice. Wallpaper and paint are just stuff, but the true heart of our practice is our people, our providers and our patients,” said Dr. Iannaccone.

The renovation project, which began in November 2013, resulted in:

  • A new registration area that maximizes patient privacy
  • A new, large waiting area with new TVs and a play area for children
  • An autism-friendly exam room
  • Two additional exam rooms, bringing the total number to eight, for quicker service
  • A state-of-the-art digital X-ray system, which enables patients to receive copies of their X-rays on disk
  • A workers’ compensation suite, which centralizes all of the services and equipment needed to provide occupational health services.
  • A hot beverage station with complimentary tea and coffee

Middletown Township’s Deputy Mayor Kevin Settembrino and Terence H. Biggs II, executive director of the Northern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce, also spoke during the ceremony. Attendees included township officials, local business leaders and local physicians. “The Township Committee wishes you continued success in your newly renovated location,” said Settembrino. “We are proud that you are a member of Middletown’s vibrant business community.

The center has been serving Monmouth County residents in its current location since April 1984. Photographs of Monmouth County landmarks and local landscapes are the focal point of the renovated space’s new beach-themed décor. In fact, the urgent care center held a contest, inviting local photography students to submit black and white photos of their favorite Monmouth County landscapes.

The work of 11 students was chosen to be displayed in the center. Those students are:

  • Halie Aaron – Communications High School, Wall Township
  • Bethany Hintze – Middletown High School North
  • Caroline Ibarra – Communications High School, Wall Township
  • Allie Kuo -- Communications High School, Wall Township

Back to Basics with 'Top Doc' Kurt Perry

There are physicians who know from the moment they receive their first toy doctor kit that they want to grow up and save lives. And there are others that discover their passion later in life. Regardless of timing, their passion for helping others does not go unnoticed. And for Dr. Kurt Perry, a physician at eMedical Offices urgent care center in Middletown, his Top Doc recognition from New Jersey Monthly magazine is long overdue.

A New Jersey native, Dr. Perry grew up in Woodbridge. He briefly attended the University of Virginia with plans to pursue a career in engineering – a decision that was fueled by stellar math scores. Realizing he wanted to be more interactive with people than a computer, Dr. Perry moved back to New Jersey and attended Middlesex County College in Edison, for two years before receiving his bachelor’s degree in biology at Rutgers University, New Brunswick. He earned his medical degree from the University of Bologna, Italy, and completed his residency in internal medicine at Monmouth Medical Center.

After finishing his residency, Dr. Perry worked in the emergency department at Monmouth Medical Center, and was employed by the hospital - a rarity these days.  Dr. Perry retired from emergency medicine in 1997.

“The field seems to be for younger people. It’s hard to grow old in emergency medicine; it’s very intense. Younger people tolerate that better,” said Dr. Perry when asked if he misses working in the emergency department.

Leaving emergency medicine to work in urgent care was a natural transition for Dr. Perry. He spent the last five years with Monmouth Medical Center working in the express care division of the emergency department – treating similar aliments that he now sees at eMedical Offices urgent care center.

When asked how he feels about urgent care, Dr. Perry said, “I love urgent care – I enjoy doing it. Urgent care seems like a new branch of emergency medicine; the real emergency medicine is heart attacks and trauma. Urgent care is more the stuff that needs to be taken care of with some degree of urgency but is not life threatening.”

Having started his career in 1978, Dr. Perry has experienced healthcare before electronic medical records and health reform. “I am one of the old doctors that prefer the simpler way,” said Dr. Perry. Advances in technology have simplified certain processes and overcomplicated others, in particular, record keeping. “You spend half the time with the patient and the other half documenting. The goal was to make things simpler, but it has probably taken away from patient care,” said Dr. Perry.

If there are any changes that make Dr. Perry happy it’s renovations to the Middletown eMedical Offices location: “Our urgent care center is staffed with board-certified emergency medicine physicians. We need to renovate the building to compete with other facilities in the area.”

The new building will be equipped with two additional exam rooms, including a child-friendly exam room; a state-of-the-art digital X-ray system, which will enable patients to receive copies of their X-rays on disk; and completely new furnishings, flooring and wall décor in a soothing, beach-themed color palette. The office will feature a worker’s compensation suite, which will centralize all of the services and equipment needed to provide occupational health services. This area will provide clinicians easy access to laboratory, X-ray, orthopedic and wound care services.

Initially pursuing a career in engineering then opting for a career in medicine, Dr. Perry has seen it all. Whether it is internal medicine or emergency medicine, Dr. Perry is getting back to basics and continuing to give patients great care with a smile at eMedical Offices urgent care.

Dr. Perry has been married for more than 40 years and has three sons. He lives in Lincroft, N.J., and is an avid boater.
